256 slice
A VPS hosting plan from Slicehost for 20 USD a month.
Description
A Slicehost VPS fills the huge performance gap between entry-level, shared hosting and expensive dedicated hosting. A 256 slice will smoke any shared package you can find in terms of performance and reliability. The 1024 slice rivals a fully dedicated server, at a fraction of the price. And every Slice package gives you full root access, instant reboots, one of several Linux distributions and the ability to install whatever software you want.
A 256 slice offers 256 MB of RAM, 10 GB of Storage and 100 GB of bandwidth.
Reviews
Symphony’s website from 2008 to end of 2009 (prior to Symphony website v3) was hosted on Slicehost. This is a superb hosting provider for web developers. They offer good documentation on setting up your server environment and provides a very nice control panel to manage your slice. During the two years we’ve been with them, the site had only been down three times (that was not of our doing).
I have hosted my personal sites on Slicehost since about late 2007 (guesswork).
I’ve never had any issues with stability or performance, and enjoyed being able to setup my server how I wanted it, rather than how someone else thought it should be.
With Slicehost, you get to customize however you like. But again, it’s you who’s managing your own server. So you need to install the OS, the webserver… if you’re up for it… this is the host for you!
NOTE: It’s not for the entry level user.
I have been using slicehost for some time for a variety of purposes and I have found them to be excellent. They have a huge range of tutorials on server management and the installation of a range of LAMP software and popular associated packages. Very reliable, very quick to get up and running.
I second that this is by no means a beginners choice, but if you are happy to get your hands dirty then you won’t find better for the price.
Slice Host is excellent. They’ve since been bought out by Rackspace, and Rackspace’s support ranges from absolutely horrible, to amazingly good (depending on the day, issue, and rep you get).
Overall I give SliceHost and Rackspace Cloud Servers (their new brand after buying Slicehost) 5 stars, I’ve been very pleased with the sites I’ve hosted on their configurations, and though I’ve never used the 256 configuration, the 512 config is a beast for my SVN setup.
Nielsen Digital's Business Standard Packages run Symphony 2.3.5 via Slicehost as our preferred host.
