This is a question for the 21degrees team:

The admin interface of Symphony 1.7 had a few icons. I'd like to use some of these for an extensions. Now Symphony 2 is under MIT license, Symphony 1.7 is not. Are we allowed to use these images in Symphony context? How are they licensed?

Good question. The icons are Allen's work, but I'm quite sure he'd have no problem with others using them. I'd like to see the whole of Symphony 1.7 released under the MIT licence (or Public Domain), so I'll mention this to the team. The reason we've refrained from doing this in the past is because we knew Symphony would be substantially changed, and didn't want to encourage developers contributing to something that would eventually be replaced.

In the meantime, please use these icons! :)
