I guess it was planned to be moved to extensions.

Yes, I think Scott, Allen and Alistair mentioned it once. My question is quite specific: Is there a simple hook for extensions to enable the Widget pane or do extensions have to recreate the whole behaviour.

There is one thing I really miss in Symphony 2: the Widgets. I'm not sure if this was the name for it in 1.7, but I'm talking about these icons in the toolbar that opened a drawer with a search, a calendar and a status notification.
Is this feature still available in Symphony 2 an can be populated via extensions?
